Isn't it funny how words come to mean what they do in the end?
In greek the word for "strike" (απεργία) means "to abstain from work" while the english word means "to hit back".
In French the word "grève" came to being because of the Grève square in Paris where the unemployed gathered to ask for work.In Spanish the word "huelga" comes from the latin verb "follicare" which means blow or pant for breath while in Italian the word "sciopero" comes from latin "ex operari" meaning "to stop working".
The first recorded strike in history took place in ancient Egypt around the 22nd century BC, during the reign of Ramses III. The workers responsible for the decoration of the monuments in the Valley of Kings protested against the lack of food supplies.
